Goal #1:
Teachers and students at BSE will engage in Balanced Math activities centered on the 4 Quadrants: inspecting equations, number work, problem solving, and fact fluency & maintenance. The Balanced Math activities occur during both the math workshop and small group instruction (90 min).
- Inspecting Equations - Algebra Readiness: It may include, but is not limited to, understanding the equal sign and explaining true and false statements.
- Number Work: Includes composing and decomposing numbers, finding and explaining numerical and operational patterns, and communicating how numbers relate.
- Problem Solving: The application of mathematical concepts in real-world situations presented in word problem format. These problems utilize multiple strategies, and students work to explain their own thinking and analyze others’ work.
- Fact fluency & Maintenance: The goal of automaticity in foundational math facts from all 4 operations.
Goal #2
Teachers will fully implement the core resource, Everyday Mathematics, into their math block in order to build consistency in instructional practice and produce similar student work exemplars for PLC dialogue.
